Progressive Web Apps: Great Experiences Everywhere (Google I/O ’17)

To understand PWA (Progressive Web App) We have to understand first a Website, Web App and Native/Mobile Apps.

Website – Group of various web pages linked with each other with every page having a URL which can be indexed by Search Engines.
Web App – Responsive version of the website, which is mobile screen compatible websites, Meaning they adjust based on the screen size of the device on which they are loaded.
Native Mobile Apps – Mobile applications which needs to be downloaded from App Store/Play Store and which can utilize the native components of the Mobile Phones, like – Offline functionality, Notifications, Location Services, telephony services, Sensors like Bluetooth, NFC, Ambient light sensor, proximity sensor, accelerometer, magnetometer, and gyroscope . ……..

PWA ( Progressive Web Apps ) – These are websites/web apps ( Indexable URLs and no need to download from App and Play Store ) which behaves like Native Mobile Apps with the ability to access all the native feature of a Mobile phone as mentioned in the Native Mobile Apps.

So, Why did we need PWA?
Every platform had their own shortcomings for example – Websites/Web Apps – not being available offline and also with the increase in mobile traffic, not being able to provide better user experience so there was a need to upgrade to something better. Similarly – It was very difficult to make users download the apps on the smartphones, companies spend millions/billions to make users download the apps.
Imagine, the number of apps that a user can download on his/her phone, The phone’s storage gives up and user ends up in uninstalling the app for which millions and billions are already spent.

One more reason was since the native apps do not have URLs like websites which can be indexed by Google, there was really no way to grow the user base organically like SEO for Websites.

All of the above was responsible for pushing the dev community to look for a better solution and the answer is PWA. Indexable URLs and no need to download from the store with Native App like User Experience.
